Matanuska Glacier Backcountry Ice Climbing
Description
This experience is about spending a full 8 hours on the Matanuska Glacier and getting comfortable moving and climbing on real ice. It’s designed for people who haven’t ice climbed before but are ready for a long, active day outdoors. You don’t need technical skills coming in. You just need a reasonable level of fitness and an open mind.
The day begins with getting geared up and learning the basics before stepping onto the glacier. Once you’re out there, you’ll notice right away that the surface is uneven and always changing. You’ll hike across ice ridges, shallow crevasses, and frozen patterns shaped by weather and melt. The pace is steady, with time to adjust and get used to walking on ice while taking in the expansive views of the surrounding glaciers.
When you reach the climbing area, you’ll be introduced to ice climbing using a secure top-rope system. You’ll practice using ice axes and crampons and then start climbing lower-angle ice walls, usually up to around 50 feet. Each climb is guided and paced to your comfort level. It’s common to feel unsure at first, but most people settle in quickly once they understand the movement and trust the gear.
You’ll rotate through climbs, take breaks, and spend plenty of time on the ice. The glacier environment keeps things interesting. Light, temperature, and weather can shift during the day, and it’s often cooler on the ice than off it.
This is a hands-on day on the glacier, not a casual walk. It’s physically demanding, rewarding, and gives you real time in a place most visitors only see from a distance. By the end, you’ll leave tired, satisfied, and with a new respect for moving through glacial terrain.
