    Frequently Asked Questions

A guide to some of the most common questions when travelling to Skagway
Should I take the train or a bus tour to White Pass/Yukon?
Great question! This depends on what type of experience you want. Train travel is a great adventure in itself, but there are benefits to opting for a bus tour including better chances of seeing wildlife. Take a look at our post about [traveling on the Klondike Highway Vs The Skagway Train](https://skagwayshoretours.com/excursion-guides/klondike-highway-vs-the-skagway-train).
What is the best time for dogsledding on a glacier?
Glacier dogsled tours stop operating for the season at the end of August. By that time, the snowmelt poses unsafe conditions for the dogs so they are taken off the glacier. We do, however, still offer many glacier helicopter tours as well as dogsled tours at the musher camps in town. As far as the best *time of day* for helicopter tours, there really isn't a best departure time. Predicting the weather in Alaska, especially Southeast, is nearly impossible. The morning and the afternoon are just as likely to be nice or rainy, so our recommendation is to choose your preferred departure time and hope for sunshine! Of course, if your tour is weather canceled, we provide a refund.
How much time is required from when my ship arrives to the tour start time?
This depends on the tour, most only require 30-minutes while others require 1-hour. We triple check all reservations to ensure the tour is compatible with your cruise ship schedule. Additionally, you **do not** need to be back at the ship hours before departure like many cruise ships claim. You need to be in line to board the ship 30-minutes prior to departure. Please contact us if you are unsure about the tour timing.
Do you guarantee returning to my ship on time?
Yes! We guarantee that you will not miss your ship. We book tours for thousands of cruise ship passengers every year and we’ve never left anyone behind! If you were to miss your ship’s departure through no fault of your own on a tour that has been booked with us, we will get you to your next port of call. *Transportation and any necessary lodging will be provided. *This guarantee is not provided for guests docking in Haines that elect to go to Skagway for a tour via ferry.
